Introduction: QuickFox Notes is a multi-tab note taking add-on for Firefox that uses the integrated bookmarks system or a single sqlite database to store notes. Therefore, if you already have either a bookmarks synchronization add-on (e.g: XMarks) or a file synchronization software (e.g: Dropbox, SugarSync, Syncplicity), your notes will be synchronized automatically.

FAQ:

0. [Q] What is new in this version?
[A] Check here: List of changes

1. [Q] Where does QuickFox Notes store the notes?
[A] By default, QuickFox Notes is using Firefox bookmarks to store note data (Check FAQ-17 for alternatives). On first start, a folder called "Quickfox Notes" is created in your bookmarks. Each bookmark of this folder represents a separate note. Hence, each bookmark is named according to the label of the note it represents. The actual text of the note is stored in the description field of the bookmark. That means you can access note data through a bookmark's properties, even if the add-on is not installed in Firefox. For example, if you are using Xmarks, you can access your bookmarks from any internet cafe via web interface. If you want to view your notes you created at home, just login to your Xmarks account and view the description field of the bookmarks from your QuickFox Notes folder.

2. [Q] How to open QuickFox Notes as a standalone application (Like MS Notepad, ...)?
[A] Create Firefox shortcut, then change the target application to: "Path to Firefox" -qfn
Note: For most of the users final string should be something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -qfn

In Linux Ubuntu:

Or even from an "application launcher" (e.g: RocketDock, ObjectDock, ...):

3. [Q] How to add QFN to the windows-context-menu?
[A] Depend on your windows version download one of these files (32 bit [Alternative] or 64 bit [Alternative]). Double click on it and you will find a new item ("Import to QFN") is added to your windows context menu.
Note: You need to edit these files with a text editor if Firefox is not installed in its default path (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\ or C:\Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Firefox\).

4. [Q] What is the "Archive"?
[A] The "Archive" is a packing tool used in QuickFox Notes. In order to free space in QuickFox Notes' window, notes that are barely in use can be moved to "Archive". "Archive" can be access in two different modes: 1. Full mode (Alt + J or click on right side of Archive button) 2. Quick mode (Alt + C or click on left side of Archive button)

[A] Control QFN by mouse: 1. Scroll on tab-bar to switch between tabs. 2. Right-click on tab to rename it. 3. Middle-click on a tab to close it. 4. Double-click on a tab to send it to the Archive. 5. Double-click on tab bar to create a new empty note

7. [Q] Is it possible to open QuickFox Notes via shortcut?
[A] Yes, try Ctrl+Shift+F; It is even possible to change this shortcut: In your address bar, type "about:config" and hit "Enter" key. Search for (1) "QuickFoxNotes.modifier" and (2) "QuickFoxNotes.key". Double-click (1) to change the value for the modifier key (Ctrl, Shift, Alt or a combination of these). Double-click (2) to change the accelerator key ('F' is default). Firefox needs to be restarted for the changes to take effect.
You may rather use this shortcut to open QFN in a Tab or Application-content: Link

8. [Q] What can I do to restore my notes in case of an error that involves data loss?
[A] Dont panic! QFN has already backed up seven copies of all notes; check Tools>Backups
Generally, there are two different methods to restore your notes:
1. In case you have Xmarks installed, you'll most likely be able to restore all your notes from the remote server where your bookmarks are synchronized to. Simply restore bookmarks from Xmarks settings>Restore
2. In case you DONT have Xmarks, try Tools>Bookmarks>Import and Backup>Restore (Read more)

9. [Q] How can I rename a Tab?
[A] Right click on title section of a note to access to the rename panel.

10. [Q] How can I change the default font family?
[A] In the address bar, type "about:config" and hit "Enter" key. Search for "QuickFoxNotes.FontFamily". Place the name of a fontfamily there (e.g.: Arial, Courier). Note that Quickfox Notes needs to be restarted for the changes to take effect.

11. [Q] How can I change the position of statusbar icon?
[A] The easiest way is to use Organize Status Bar add-on developed by y5.

12. [Q] Define an arbitrary color for Background/Text?
[A] In the address bar, type "about:config", and hit "Enter" key. Search for "QuickFoxNotes.TabColor"/"QuickFoxNotes.TextColor". Place name of a color there.

13. [Q] How to work with "Google" word suggestion/calculator feature?
[A] Let's assume we are trying to write down "Firefox bookmarks addon" in the editor. To do so, just type a portion of the first word ("Fire" in this example) and hit F1 (F1 will search Google for only one word before cursor's position; "Fox" in our example). Results will be shown as a notification box (Only if any suggestion has been found). Press 1-9 keys to select one of the suggestions; to ignore them press "Esc" key. Now assume that we have "Firefox boo" in the editor. This time press F2 which searchs Google for two last words before the cursor's position ("Firefox boo" in this example) (Note that by pressing F1 only last word will be considered which will lead to inappropriate suggestions!).
F3 and F4 work similarly but based on three and four words, respectively.
This feature can be employed as a spell checker as well. For instance write down "bokmark" and press F1, it should suggest "Bookmark". Moreover, it can work as an online calculator. Some examples (To test, select the whole expression and right click on it, then choose "Google suggestion based on selected text"):
1. (1+sqrt(2))+pi=
2. 1*electron mass=
3. 1 km in miles=
You can force the calculator to try to evaluate an expression by putting an equals sign (=) after it. Check this site for more information on how to work with Google calculator.

15. [Q] What is Simplenote?
[A] Simplenote replaces the Notes app on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. From QuickFox Notes you can import or export notes from/to Simplenote server. As a consequence, you have access to your notes from your iphone, ipod touch, ipad, or Android.

16. [Q] Monospaced fonts for editor
[A] Monospaced font, is a font whose letters and characters occupy the same amount of horizontal space. QuickFox Notes can support this type of fonts as far as the font has been already installed in your system. First select a monospaced font from this list then check the availability and then follow up FAQ #10.

17. [Q] How to switch to 'Local storage'?
[A] 1.If keeping existing notes is concerned, go to Tools>Options>Change Repository>Switch and Keep existing notes. Please note that, QFN will NOT make any change to the current repository, it would be possible to switch back to the current repository at any rate.
2. In case that more than one repository is of interest, go to Tools>Options>Change Repository>Select hard disk folder and switch to it. In this case, you will be switched to a new repository (Clean one if you don't have qfn.sqlite file inside the folder, otherwise, QFN will append the database file) and your current repository is intact. You can switch back to the current repository at any time.
Related extension: Repository Switch

18. [Q] Is it possible to have more than one repository?
[A] Yes, QFN is capable to use a single sqlite database as well as a bookmark folder as its primery repository. Consider that during the switch process to a new repository (Tools>Options>Change Repository) your current repository is intact, so your data is safe and you can switch back to current repository at any rate.
> To have more than one 'Hard disk' repository, create a new folder in a location that QFN is permitted to read and write, then try Tools>Options>Change Repository>Select hard disk folder to point QFN to this folder.
> To have more than one 'Bookmarks' repository, Try Tools>Options>Change Repository>Change default 'Bookmarks' folder. To return back to original repository change 'Bookmarks folder' to 'QuickFox Notes' and switch to it.

Note that if either the 'local sqlite database' or 'bookmarks folder' exists, then QFN will append them without erasing them in any options RATHER than "Switch and keep existing notes".
